Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Relocation of a community of nuns and observance of papal cloister, 2005, Private.

A community of cloistered nuns, having obtained permission to alienate their monastery property, requested permission to relocate their community of seven religious for a period of time to a location provided by an apostolic congregation of women religious. The letters of the major superiors of both religious institute and the supporting letter of the diocesan bishop of the diocese are as follows:

Dear Cardinal Somalo:

Recently our _____ Community received permission from the Congregation for Consecrated Life to alienate the monastery property (prot. n. _____). Our present situation of seven members, four of whom are quite ill, prompts us to consider serious options for the future. Since we have not yet decided on a suitable option, i.e., to purchase a smaller property or to seek transfers to other monasteries, I ask that we be permitted to live cloistered community within the circumscribed space provided by the Sisters of _____ of _____ diocese.

The major superior of this religious congregation has secured space that will enable us to live our obligations as cloistered nuns for the time necessary. We have an appropriate space for prayer and adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, and we are able to gather for common celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. The sisters have been most gracious in meeting our needs; four of our community reside in the infirmary of that congregation. Since this request is rather unusual, we have consulted our bishop and have his approval to pursue this request.

Please find enclosed a letter from our Bishop _____, who is in agreement with the relocation of the _____ Community, and also a letter from the Superior of the _____ of _____ of _____ diocese who has given us hospitality within their community in order for us to live our particular charism.

Thank you, Cardinal Somalo, for your service to all religious and in particular to us as we see how best to live out our cloistered religious life. Be assured of our prayers for you and your staff.

Gratefully yours,

His Eminence Eduardo Cardinal Martinez Somalo

Dear Cardinal Somalo:

On behalf of the Sisters of _____ of _____ diocese, I am delighted to welcome the _____ Nuns into our home.

We have done all within our power to assure them that their contemplative life style will be maintained. An appropriate space for prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has been provided. We are able to meet all their needs, both spiritual and physical.

Thank you, Cardinal Somalo, for your work on behalf of all religious and in particular for this _____ Community. Be assured of our continued prayers for you and your ministry.

Gratefully,

Superior

Dear Cardinal Somalo:

Pursuant to the rescript (Prot. n. _____) granting permission for alienation of their convent property, I write in support of the major superior's petition to relocate the _____ community of nuns to the area in the convent provided by the Sisters of _____ for the necessary period of time. The latter congregation has assured me and the major superior that the space is adequate for the nuns to live in accord with the obligations of their contemplative life.

Due to its size, the _____ Monastery has to be alienated. It has become increasingly burdensome for the small and aged community of seven, four of whom are quite infirm and residing in the infirmary of the Sisters of _____.

Since the cloistral norms of Verbi Sponsa do not provide for this relocation of the cloistered community, it would seem that the permission of the Congregation for Consecrated Life is necessary for the _____ Monastery sui iuris of pontifical right.

Thank you, Cardinal Somalo, for your kind attention to the needs of the _____ nuns. We are privileged to have them in the Diocese of _____ and the Sisters of _____ extending hospitality to them.

With every good wish, I remain

Your brother in Christ,

Bishop of _____

Vatican _____ (Date)

Prot. n. _____

Your Excellency,

In your letter dated _____, you presented to this Congregation the situation of the _____ nuns of _____ diocese, and their request to transfer to the place provided to them by the Sisters of _____, where they can continue to live as cloistered nuns for the time necessary.

Considering the situation of the nuns of diocese, and the assurance of the Superior of the Congregation of the Sisters of _____ to provide for the spiritual and physical needs of the nuns, this Dicastery grants to Your Excellency the faculty to relocate the _____ community of nuns to the area in the convent provided to them by the said Congregation for the necessary period of time.

In hope that this solution bears the desired fruits in the above-mentioned Community, I send cordial wishes in the Lord.

Sincerely in Christ,

Prefect

Secretary
