Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Notification Concerning the Freedom of a Bishop to Carry the Crozier when Celebrating in Another Diocese, 14 September 1998.

Prot. N. 2443/97/L

Notification

There has come to this dicastery from many persons the request for a clarification on the use of the crozier by a bishop in a diocese which is not his own.

This Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, since this is within its competence, after a careful examination and after having consulted the Supreme Authority, is able to respond in the following way:

Since the crozier is a sign of the power of the diocesan bishop, when the Ceremonial of Bishops provides for the use of the crozier in a specific celebration (the chrism Mass, ordinations, dedication of a church ...), in the consent given by another bishop to celebrate in the diocese, there is implicit also the concession to make use of the crozier.

From the Vatican, 14 September 1998.
