Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Imposing Exclaustration for One Year, 1998. Private.

Because of the difficulties a member in a clerical institute of pontifical right experienced in living the common life according to the proper norms, the superior general, having obtained the consent of the council, petitioned for imposed exclaustration. The rescript from the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL) responded to the superior general’s request and imposed exclaustration on the member for one year. The following reply was sent in English to the superior general:

Reverend Father,

This Congregation, after due consideration of the reasons submitted concerning the way of life of ____________ of ____________, considering all factors which are germane to the situation, has determined that it be decreed:

Exclaustration is imposed on the above mentioned ____________ for one year, according to the norm of canon 686 §3 of the Code of Canon Law.

The occasion serves to extend to you and all the members of your institute our communion in faith and in prayer.

In the letter accompanying the rescript, the Undersecretary of CICLSAL recognized that the behavior of the member was incompatible with the

regular common life of the institute. However, he reminded the superior general that with the expiration of the time of imposed exclaustration, the member had both a right and duty to return to community life.

The Undersecretary recommended that the superior general or his delegate meet regularly with the member on enforced exclaustration in order to assist him to the extent possible to discern his vocation to religious life.
