Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Support for a separated member of a religious institute, 21 January 2008, Private.

Upon departure from her religious institute, a woman was given assistance that the general superior and council considered appropriate in light of the canonical requirement to “observe equity and charity” (c. 702) towards a member who is separated from it. The former member did not consider the assistance the institute offered sufficient for her life style and asked the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL) to intervene on her behalf. The Congregation responded to the departing member communicating that any decision regarding additional assistance to her would be determined by the superior and the council. The text of the Congregation’s response follows:

Dear Sr. _____,

Your letter of December 21, 2007, regarding the support offered to _____ upon her departure from your Institute, has been received in this Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Thank you for having forwarded this information.

In our original correspondence with Miss _____, this Dicastery clearly communicated that any decision regarding additional assistance would be decided upon by you and your Council.

We are satisfied to learn that the matter was reconsidered and that, following consultation with your Council and other advisors, you have arrived at the conclusion that “additional assistance at this time is unwarranted.” We were also pleased to note your openness to offer further assistance in the future based on Miss _____’s “demonstrated need.”

May the Lord abundantly bless you, your Council and all the _____ Sisters.

Sincerely in Christ,

(signed)

Undersecretary
